  1. King of Macedonia from 359 BC. He seized the
  2. throne from his nephew, for whom he was
  3. regent, conquered the Greek city states, and
  4. formed them into a league whose forces could
  5. be united against Persia. He was assassinated
  6. while he was planning this expedition, and
  7. was succeeded by his son Alexander the Great.
  8. His tomb was discovered at Vergina, N Greece,
  9. in 1978.
